Our IAL here at NYU began as an instance of the Interaction Analysis Labs working groups described by Jordan & Henderson in their 1995 JLS piece on IA. At the same time, it has also become a forum for small, informal, intergenerational discussion sessions about discourse/interaction analysis methods broadly, as well as other aspects of our members’ scholarship, in the spirit of the Research Group meetings that were such a large part of my own doctoral study. The conversations in our group tend to follow member-initiated topics, running the gamut from methodological queries to technical advice to pure data sessions (although we always try to ground the discussion in some data). We have also devoted sessions to discussing shared readings, workshopping paper and conference proposal drafts, and developing some group projects. Students, faculty, and researchers are welcome to join us; we're glad to have diverse voices and perspective.
We meet weekly each semester, and members join as they are able. In Spring 2022 meetings will be Tuesdays or Fridays on a rotating schedule to allow as many people to come as possible. Please reach out if you would like to join!
